Tawantinsuyu

In Quechua the term Tawantin is a group of four things. Suyu means region or province. The empire was divided into four suyus, whose corners met at the capital, Cusco (Qosqo). The name Tawantinsuyu was, therefore, a descriptive term indicating a union of provinces. This project explores the present day regions of the Inca empire.

Vessels Of Life

Moving water, as in a river, is considered purifying in Hindu culture because it is thought to both absorb impurities and take them away. What the rivers remove, however, is not necessarily physical dirt, but symbolic dirt; it wipes away the sins of the bather, not just of the present, but of a lifetime. This project explores the Indian people's complex relationship with the sacred rivers of north India.

Rapa Nui, The Navel of the World

Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, is one of the most isolated places on Earth. Ever since a Dutch expedition led by Admiral Jacob Roggeveen landed on Rapa Nui on Easter day 1722, the island has fueled some of the greatest mysteries known to history. These photos were taken in 2003 during my two trips to the island.
